Brown Sugar Scrub
Hi:
I made a brown sugar scrub for Christmas presents and it came out great. I recently tried to recreate it without the recipe and have completely fouled it up. I was wondering if you have any suggestions on how to salvage it. I used honey, brown sugar, glycerin, sweet almond oil, and I hate to admit it, but I was out of oats so I ground up Cheerios.... ;) Well, it won't blend together like the last batch I made. The solids have clumped together in a big thick gooey mass and the oil just sits completely separate. I can NOT get them to combine no matter what I do: stir, mash with my hands or blend on high in my blender. They totally resist each other.
Any recommendations?
Thanks in advance any and all help you might be able to offer.
-Tia.
Hi Tia,
Let me tell you, the Cheerios part is hilarious :)
I believe your problem is glycerin. Is is a lipid (fat) and it doesn't dissolve well. Next time, make a brown sugar scrub without it, here are a couple of recipes that don't have it:
Brown sugar body scrub
Ingredients
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons ground oats
2 tablespoons aloe vera gel
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 teaspoon almond oil (in case you don't have almond oil, use olive oil, it is a great substitute).
Preparation
* Before you start preparing this scrub, grind the oatmeal using a coffee grinder or food processor. It has to be of sandy consistency, flaky and light otherwise it will scratch the skin.
* Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. Mix until it resembles a paste
* It should be applied on moist skin, the best time is after you took a shower. It will help the skin cells slough off faster.
* Use circular motion and massage gently using your fingertips.
* Rinse off with warm water.
Brown sugar lemony body scrub recipe
Ingredients
1/ cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sea salt
1 tablespoon of coconut oil (as with the previous scrub, you could use olive oil)
1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tablepoon of honey.
Preparation
* Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. Mix until it resembles a paste
* It should be applied on moist skin, the best time is after you took a shower. It will help the skin cells slough off faster.
* Use circular motion and massage gently using your fingertips.
* Rinse off with warm water.
Almond oil sugary scrub
Ingredients
* 2/3 cup Brown Sugar
* 1/2 Cup Sweet Almond Oil
* 10 Drops Vitamin E
* 10 Drops Essential oil/Fragrance Oil
Preparation
Mix oil, vitamin E and essential oil or fragrance oil in a bowl. Add sugar and mix well. Divide into containers.
I hope it helps,
