Remove cuticles properly

This comes as a first tip. Just this one thing will save you efforts in trying to take good care of them. They should not be cut using scissors or a sharp remover. They should be pushed back, always, using a wash cloth or pusher. Only the excess skin should be pushed back. Dipping fingers in warm water for a few minutes greatly reduces the effort of pushing them back.

For a few dollars, you can buy a good quality cuticle pusher that will last you for years.
