Facial hair, oily skin, large pores and dark blemishes

by Kohava Joyner

I feel like I have the worst skin ever. I am an African American 21 year old woman. I shave away facial hair daily! My face is always oily with dark blemishes on my jaw line cheeks and under my chin. What types of home remedies can I use for these problems?

Hi Kohava,

Your first step in dealing with oily skin is to try and deal with the excess oil. Overproduction of oil by oil glands is what leads to blemishes. Pores get clogged up with excess oil so you have to start off with opening them up. Start by preparing a facial steam. Steam will open up the pores and allow the impurities to come out. Introducing a facial toner is a good idea; it tones the skin (obviously) but also acts as a cleanser.

Introducing a citrus based ingredient is helpful for reduction of large pores. Once you have dealt with excess oil you can start using a facial mask that removes the oiliness and greasy residues. Yeast facial mask is a good choice for oily skin; it will dry up the oiliness but won't leave the skin too dry as it nourishes it at the same time.

Facial hairs - there's no need to shave the facial hairs. Try preparing a body wax recipe (also used for facial hairs) or a sugar based hair remover.

I hope this helps a bit,

Facial hair and Afro American women NEW
by: Houston

A wonderful and knowledgable physician introduced me to laser skin treatment specifically for black women. Shaving in areas like the face can take a toll on the skin. Laser therapy is a great affordable alternative that will remove unwanted hair and visibly alter the rough and spotty appearance of the skin. It's definitely worth the investment!

Additional solution
by: Cooly

Alos, try and get a hold of milled flaxseeds. Eat 2 table spoons everyday to help balance your hormones. You will notice a difference in 2 months and your menstrual cycle will become unusually regular! Woo hoo.

If this could give you less worries, well, you don't get a ape or get a hairy face by shaving. You have a hormonal problem true, but shaving didn't worsen it.

Facial Hair
by: Angie in Atlanta

Hello Kohava,

I am a 41 year old African American Female living in Atlanta, GA. For years I have suffered with facial hair (and ways to remove it)

Recently I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) One of the classis signs of this in women is excessive facial hair. Mi OBGYN has placed me on Glocophage (Metformin) because I was also found to be insulin resistant. What PCOS does in women is it produces too much of the male hormone. Other symptoms are irregular menstrual cycles, inability to become pregnant, thinning hair or baldness, weight gain (especially around the waist), dark mass around the neck, under arm pits, or in any skin folds, and acne to name a few. Please see your Gynecologist or doctor and ask to be tested for PCOS. I feel so much better. I have lost weight and I don't notice as much facial hair as before. I am also under the care of a skin specialist who as started me on Obagi skin care products and a course of skin peels for the hyperpigmentation that developed as a result of plucking the facial hair. Best of luck to you.

facial hair
by: Anonymous

I have alot of facial hair and I have tried everything that I can afford. Lasor hurt and burned so bad that I could not take it nor did it remove any hair. Creams just burn and my hair is to course to be removed. I have so much hair it would take days of pain to pluck. I have been tested for hormone issues and Iam fine. No one else in my family has this issue.

I want to start waxing my facial hair however, I have been shaving for years and I would have to let the hair grow out before I could wax. I would look like a APE if I let my hair grow out for 3weeks before waxing. How can go to work or live my life with a full grown out beard?

I just don't know what else to do.
