Our readers' tips - Coconut oil skin care

Our reader Danni sent a couple a few great coconut oil skin care tips:

  • Organic coconut oil is great for dry skin. In winter, slather it on your feet and wear socks to bed to keep your skin supple.
  • A few drops in bathwater leave your skin feeling luxuriously smooth.
  • And finally, it makes a good moisturizer for the face if you don't have an oily complexion.

Thanks so much Danni!

I personally think that coconut oil is one of the best natural skin care ingredients around. Coconut oil, especially virgin, when it is organic and additives-free, makes one of the best natural moisturizers around. It is most commonly used as a carrier oil since it is a great base to dilute essential oils.

What makes it perfect for preparation of dry skin moisturizer and hand cream, is that it is rich in fats but doesn't leave a greasy residue on the skin.

Once applied, the skin absorbs it quickly and it moves into the deeper layers to provide nourishment and moisture that is so necessary for healthy, elastic skin. Its aroma is not overwhelming so it easily blends with many different ingredients for a creamy consistency. The less refined it is, the more likely it is that it will have that wonderful warm aroma of coconut.

An additional value of this oil comes in that it is a strong antibacterial and antifungal agent. It quickly kills both bacteria and fungi and accelerates the healing of the skin affected by them.

Don't be afraid to buy it in bulk package. Kept at room temperature, this oil will last for months.
