Vaseline: A Surprisingly Great Skin Moisturizer

by Katherine

Dry skin runs in my family, so it's not surprising that my skin is ashy and rough. When my grandmother told me about how she took care of her dry skin, I was more than a little surprised. She told me Vaseline was one of the best ways to hydrate dry skin. I had always thought Vaseline was just something my mother slapped on my little brother's behind when he had a diaper rash. So, that night I tested my grandmother's theory. In a matter of minutes, my skin was smooth and soft. Vaseline is very rich, so you only need to apply a small amount. If you apply too much, your skin will appear oily and greasy. Also, make sure you rub it well into the skin. Vaseline usually works best right after you've taken a shower and are ready to go to bed. That way, it has a chance to sink into the skin. Vaseline works really well for me, and I hope this helps those who have dry skin.

Thanks, Katherine

Hi Katherine,

I also like using Vaseline. It can be used for foot care: simply apply Vaseline on your feet, put some socks on, and leave it like that overnight. It truly does magic in how it heals the skin and makes it soft. Also a good use of Vaseline: chapped lips. Thanks for the tip,

Why use liquid parrafin on your skin?
by: Anonymous

Vaseline is liquid parrafin. Baby Oil is liquid parrafin. There are so many wonderful plant based oils and butters to use on ones precious skin why use Parrafin?

Vaseline is an ointment in that it contains no water, similar but more long lasting benefits, can be found using a water free ointment such as Monoi Moisture Lock.

the truth about mineral oil and petroleum jelly (vaseline)
by: Katie

Many substances derived from nature are anything but, and the body is perhaps the best judge of when the line between natural and refined has been crossed. Mineral oil and petroleum jelly may be derived from natural petroleum, but they are highly processed hydrocarbons that do not readily break down in the environment or our skin. They are not only incompatible with but also block sebum while disrupting the skin's ability to regulate and receive real moisture according to cosmetic and plant chemist Audrey Hampton, Ph.D. They can also leave the lips and skin dryer (causing "lip balm addiction") and both mineral oil and petroleum jelly have been shown to cause chemically induced acne. Why not consider skin-compatible oils and lip balms containing ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, beeswax, calendula, aloe, allantoin (comfrey root), and vitamins C and E? All of these truly hydrate, heal, and protect skin/lips, not just seal them! :-) yay!

Yes plain vaseline is best for skin, chapped lips & feet. I always keep a small pack of vaseline in my purse whenever i go out.I keep applying on my lips. Applying vaseline before lipstick prevents lips from getting dry.
